Meri’s Musical Musings

Pieces in 5-beat meter that you may or may not know

Posted on: April 8, 2011

Many people know Dave Brubeck’s Take 5 and one movement of Tchaikovsky’s 5th symphony have an unusual meter in that they are in 5-beat groups, but I have recently thought about other pieces that are in 5 main beats. Here are a few of them.

Theme from ‘Mission Impossible’

Mars, the Bringer of War (from The Planets by Gustav Holst)

Neptune (also from the Planets)

Music from ‘The Incredibles”

Much merengue music, especially from Venezuela is set in 5 beats

Money (Pink Floyd)

Seven Days (Sting)

Pictures at an Exhibition (mixes 5/4 and 6/4)
